Annihilation (The Movie 2018)

This was a movie I kinda looked forward to seeing because of Alex Garland.  The Director for Ex Machina, an odd but amazing movie.  Annihilation is part one of a 3 part series that I started with the book and now watched the movie.  Alicia and I sit through a movie that is not quite what we thought it would be. Listen to the weird background music from the soundtrack we play behind us.

Annihilation is a 2014 novel by Jeff VanderMeer. It is the first in a series of three books called the Southern Reach Trilogy. The book describes a team of four women (a biologist, an anthropologist, a psychologist, and a surveyor) who set out into an area known as Area X. The area is abandoned and cut off from the rest of civilization.[1] They are the 12th expedition. The other expeditions have been fraught with disappearances, suicides, aggressive cancers, and mental trauma

 

Mother (Darren Aronofsky) 2017

So I sit down and watch this controversial movie on my own.  Because of the visceral reviews and back and forward opinions.  I knew Alicia would fall asleep on this one.  What I find is one of the most creative movies interpreted in a long time.

A couple's relationship is tested when uninvited guests arrive at their home, disrupting their tranquil existence. From filmmaker Darren Aronofsky (Black Swan, Requiem for a Dream), mother! psychological thriller about love, devotion and sacrifice.

Marcus "the visual" Williams

On this podcast I sit down with a talented artist, illustrator and community activist Marcus "The Visual" Williams.  We discuss his independent comics and artwork and how he promotes it to children.  Also we Geek out about the new Marvel Cinematic Universe.

 

A long time lover of video games, comic art, and all things animated, I’ve dedicated my young artistic years to fine tuning my illustration muscles by way of freelancing. Over fifteen years later, I’m catching my stride and still ever growing in hopes of being a well rounded illustrator.
Stationed in Atlanta Ga, I spend most of my time toiling away late nights on everything from illustrating children’s books, comic art, to random character commissions and more. A proud father of two, I somehow manage to steal enough time to create loads of artwork and check homework. Nipsey Hussle & Cozz

We stay on the West Coast and grab hold of two new releases.  Both from L.A the area with styles that may seem similar but unique in a way to see how quality trumps style. Cozz being a Dreamville alum and Nipsey with Atlantic records.  Pretty interesting when you hear the features and production quality.  

Cassiday Blare 2016 Pinot Noir

This Cassiday Blare 2016 Pinot Noir, is a striking wine that will be an instant classic. Powerful, with notes of dark berries and plum, this wine is enjoyable to drink on its own, but it really shines with food. We’ve been enjoying it seasoned lamb and roasted asparagus that really brings out the earthiness of the Pinot Noir grapes. It retails for $30.

Molly's Game

The true story of Molly Bloom, a beautiful, young, Olympic-class skier who ran the world's most exclusive high-stakes poker game for a decade before being arrested in the middle of the night by 17 FBI agents wielding automatic weapons. Her players included Hollywood royalty, sports stars, business titans and finally, unbeknown to her, the Russian mob. Her only ally was her criminal defense lawyer Charlie Jaffey, who learned there was much more to Molly than the tabloids led people to believe.

 

 

Altered Carbon (Netflix)

 

Alicia and I sit down and watch the 10 episode sci-fi series Altered Carbon which blew us away with the concept and new way of seeking immortality in the future.  Outstanding tech and visual sets.  This is one on the most interesting and controversial shows dropped on Netflix.

 

More than 300 years in the future, society has been transformed by new technology, leading to human bodies being interchangeable and death no longer being permanent. Takeshi Kovacs is the only surviving soldier of a group of elite interstellar warriors who were defeated in an uprising against the new world order. His mind was imprisoned for centuries until impossibly wealthy businessman Laurens Bancroft offers him the chance to live again. Bancroft's request of Kovacs is to solve a murder -- Bancroft's. "Altered Carbon" is based on Richard K. Morgan's cyberpunk noir novel of the same name

Black History and the recent Gun Violence

We start with Black History month and the Black Panther movie. Then we speak to this week senseless shooting in a school and we get into the conversation again with Gun control and mental health.  And the dangers of arming teachers and other nonsense.   

  

State of the Union and Political Media outlets

The Team gets together to finish off our discussion about the democrats failure to bring a message to everyone about our country going forward.  We debate how we get our news and attempt to understand how we as a nation can get pass ignorance and stupidity.

 

The Post

For our round of Oscar nominated fits for this year.  We stop and go see The Post directed by Steven Spielberg.  You may or may not know but we know what to expect from a vanilla based, safe directing movie Spielberg always makes.  But based on the conditions of today we looked forward to seeing a nonfictional adaptation.

The Post is a thrilling drama about the unlikely partnership between The Washington Post's Katharine Graham (Streep), the first female publisher of a major American newspaper, and editor Ben Bradlee (Hanks), as they race to catch up with The New York Times to expose a massive cover-up of government secrets that spanned three decades and four U.S. Presidents. The two must overcome their differences as they risk their careers - and their very freedom - to help bring long-buried truths to light
